5 Politicians That Oppose Electronic Cigarettes

5 Politicians That Oppose Electronic Cigarettes

In the battle against electronic cigarette bans, there are several politicians that we all need to be aware of. These five legislators have actively worked to oppose e-cigarettes and make sure they are banned in various parts of the country. Take a minute to learn more about these five politicians that oppose e-cigarettes and then consider writing a letter or making a phone call to their offices to express your opinions.

California Senator Ellen Corbett

Senator Corbet is responsible for writing SB 648. This bill could potentially be a train wreck for e-cig users in California, as it would ban their use in almost all workplaces and within 20 feet of any public building or state vehicle. The bill says e-cigarettes “may be a hazard to the health of the general public” and Senator Corbett argues that there is lack of evidence to deem them as safe. Obviously, Senator Corbet hasn’t done her research! You can learn more about SB 648 and find out how you can fight against it here.

Scott Neal, Washington State Tobacco Prevention Program Manager

Despite the fact that e-cigarettes contain no tobacco, Scott Neal has been on a warpath to get them banned. He’s been successful in Seattle, but he isn’t content yet. Neal claims that e-cigs threaten smoking cessation efforts by making cigarette use socially acceptable again. He said, “By returning smoking to the public eye, public e-cigarette use threatens to undermine the social norming impact.”

Utah Governor Gary Herbert

E-cig users in Utah are prohibited from using electronic cigarettes indoors in all public places thanks to the bill that Governor Herbert signed in March 2012. The Utah senate passed the bill with a 24-3 vote before Herbert sealed the deal with his signature.

Barbara Ferrer, Public Health Commission in Boston

When Boston voted to regulate e-cigarettes as tobacco products, Barbara Ferrer was notably excited. As executive director of the Public Health Commission, it seems she had done a less than stellar job on researching electronic cigarettes. On the day when the regulations were voted in place, she said, “The steps the board has taken today will help reduce young people’s exposure to tobacco and unregulated nicotine products and eliminate exposure to e-cigarette vapors containing nicotine and other known toxins in the workplace.” Some one should really inform Ferrer that e-cig vapor isn’t harmful and they don’t contain tobacco!

New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine

When New Jersey voted to prohibit e-cigarette use indoors, the fault was ultimately on then Governor Jon Corzine. The senate passed the amendments to the Smoke Free Air Act with a vote of 38-0, but the governor could have easily vetoed it and provided research to disprove the e-cig myths. Of course, that didn’t happen and once again, we have an example of a politician who joins the fight against electronic cigarettes without ever learning what they are.
