How Much Money Will You Really Save By Switching to E-Cigs?

How Much Money Will You Really Save By Switching to E-Cigs?

Quitting tobacco use is obviously a good move for your physical well being, but health benefits aside, there is another huge perk to switching to electronic cigarettes. Most people will save hundreds or even thousands of dollars a year by jumping on the vaping train and leaving their old analog cigarettes behind. Let’s take a look at just how much money you can really save by switching to e-cigarettes.

Since just last year, cigarette prices have soared. In New Hampshire, smokers are now paying 35% more per pack of cigarettes. Average price per pack ranges from $4.96 in Kentucky all the way up to $14.50 in New York. For the sake of our analysis, let’s pick a conservative number and say that you are typically paying $5.50 per pack. So if you smoke a pack a day, then you are spending $38.50 each week on cigarettes. That adds up to a whopping $2002 in a year. Even if you don’t allow for inflation, that means you are going to spend over $20,000 on cigarettes in just one decade. Yet many smokers continue puffing away for a lifetime.

If you decide to switch to electronic cigarettes, you could save some serious money. Let’s look at a couple different scenarios. First, let’s assume you opt to use disposable e-cigarettes, the most expensive option. Most disposables will last around 400-500 puffs or about two days worth for the pack-a-day smoker. You can plan to pay around $8 for a disposable e-cig. So in a week, you’re going to spend around $28 for disposable e-cigs. That’s a savings of $10 a week or $520 a year.

Now if you want to save money, a rechargeable e-cigarette starter kit is the way to go. You will pay somewhere around $80 for a starter kit and then refill cartridges will average about $2 a piece. Each cartridge typically lasts as long as one cigarette pack. So after you buy the initial starter kit, you are looking at around $14 a week or $728 a year. In this scenario, you’re saving $24.50 a week and $1274 per year. What would you do with an extra $1274? I bet you can think of a few good ideas!

Keep in mind that electronic cigarette prices vary heavily by brand. We discuss price points in our brand reviews to help you find the best value. You can also save even more money by using e-liquid to refill your own cartridge blanks.

No matter how you cut it, switching to electronic cigarettes is a good financial move. Not only are you eliminating tobacco and that nasty ash tray smell, but you are saving a lot of money each year.
